Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.
(Romans 13:1 ESV)
Romans 13 is a good text to read in an election year. In the midst of an election cycle, it’s easy to lose faith and trust in our elected leaders. As the primary candidates prepare to come to Michigan, we are sure to hear lots of attack ads, lots of promises, and lots of speeches. When you’re constantly bombarded by propaganda and “stump speeches,” it’s hard to remember that we are called to be subject to the governing authorities because they have been instituted by God. Our God is sovereign, and in his sovereignty can use a system like ours to raise up the leaders of his choosing. I am not looking forward to the mudslinging this month and throughout the election cycle, but I am looking forward to seeing God’s hand at work in a process that will give us the leaders and authorities he has chosen for us at this time in our history. This is also a good time to pray for our elected leaders and for those seeking office, asking that God would give them wisdom and that they would be good stewards of the authority God has given them.
